Bustle Era Patterns
by Shooting Star Enterprises

What is the difference between our patterns and others?
We have researched ours as completely as possible assure some of the most correct patterns on the market. In addition to getting the correct general look from fashion plates, we have also studied garments in museum collections, period drafting systems, and photographs of real people of the time period.

Basic Bustle Era Skirt
Whether you need to dress for the ball, or a good sturdy dress for housework, this pattern will cover the basic bustle era skirt with adaptations to create most skirts from 1868-1888. The pattern includes 4 views:

View A- A basic skirt great for work, walking or wear under a polonaise:

View B- Early Bustle Era with a box pleated or gathered flounce;

View C- 1876-1880 a slimmer style with several rows of shirring and a slight train; and

View D Late Bustle era dress with a knife pleated ruffle and directions to make a foundation skirt.

The pattern will also include Marna Jean's ruffle worksheet on how to figure the amount of fabric needed for nearly any type of ruffle desired.

!! BONUS !!
I have added a cutting lines for two train styles, scalloped ruffle guide, pleating guide for double box pleats, book lined ruffle directions and plenty of historical notes.

I make most of my skirts from this basic skirt pattern.

Note:This is for the skirt pattern ONLY!

It has two length options-A. waist (short) and B. basque (hip length) and depending on the fabrics and trim used can be made up into an appropriate bodice for nearly any situation. It was not taken directly from an existing garment, but rather made by studying many such garments, pattern drafts, photos, and fashion plates as being the most "representative" of the period.
The pattern also shows the line for cutting a square neck for evening wear and is complete with historical notes and decoration ideas from original sources.
This bodice should be very fitted when finished, and only 1/2 inch ease is allowed in the pattern, plus a wide seam allowance at the side seam to allow for fitting. If you have not worn a properly fitted period bodice before it is suggested you make it up in an inexpensive fabric to see if you want to make it from the next larger size. This pattern was created for the early bustle time frame-1869-1875. It is made with 3 main body pieces and a slightly long shoulder, as is appropriate for this time frame.

PAT-Allie
Although the side back seams likely place this gown in the 1877-81 period, the style could easily be worn into the early 1880's, and therefore we have included it here as well.
This pattern is based on an original in my collection, and options are taken from ideas from other period gowns as well as pattern catalogs. This pattern can be easily adapted for any season by choice of fabric, but the original was meant as a summer gown with its ¾ length sleeves, and unlined bodice. It would have been easily washed, and the slight flounces and self bias trim would hold up well when laundered. It was what would be known during the natural form period as an easy fitting basque, or simply by leaving the dart out- a "half fitting sacque"
Options included are full length sleeves, simple bias binding techniques, and a roll collar
Historical notes, notes on the original, design change ideas including fancy "house gowns" and clear instructions with drawings help you turn this cute and comfy dress out in record time. This dress originally made use of many "speed sewing" and money saving techniques to create a very classic styled dress for the average woman.
